Overview of the Student-Family Journey

In your collaboration with Pepperland, you will frequently hear us reference "journey stages" in describing where a student or their family falls on their journey towards applying and enrolling. This article describes this concept in detail.

The journey of prospective families choosing a school is a nuanced process, much like the buyer's journey in marketing. As families research educational options, they move through distinct stages, each requiring different types of information and engagement.

Each stage of the journey reflects a progression in informational needs and research patterns, highlighting the importance of having well-defined personas to effectively address these evolving requirements.

Awareness Stage:

In this initial phase, families often start their school search journey online, conducting Google searches, engaging in social media conversations, and consuming various forms of digital content. They may read educational blogs, listen to parenting podcasts, or watch informational social media reels to clarify their thoughts and goals. At this stage, they're recognizing a need — such as a nurturing educational environment for their child — but may struggle to articulate specific requirements or options.

To guide families at this stage, create content that is informative and exploratory, focusing on broad educational topics, the importance of different schooling approaches, and general tips for selecting a school. This content should be easily accessible, such as blog posts, social media infographics, and tip videos on YouTube and social media. Downloadable guides or ebooks should be considered to give families an opportunity to explore a topic in more depth after reading a blog post or watching a short introductory video.

Consideration Stage:

As families become more informed, their research deepens. They start comparing schools, looking into specific programs, and seeking opinions from their social circles. They look for content that speaks directly to their concerns and aligns with their emerging preferences, which can vary significantly based on their personas.

To guide families at this stage, develop more detailed content that showcases your school's unique offerings, such as in-depth downloadable guides on specific programs, testimonials from parents and students, and virtual tours of the school’s campus. Webinars or Q&A sessions can also be effective.

Decision Stage:

This critical stage is often marked by heightened anxiety or nervousness as parents close in on making a decision. They seek detailed, reassuring information that can alleviate their concerns and affirm their choice. The journey's nuances at this stage underscore the importance of understanding different personas, as each family's decision-making process is influenced by their unique priorities and values.

To guide families through this stage, offer personalized content like detailed guides on the admissions process, comparisons with other schools, and one-on-one consultations. This stage is about providing reassurance and clarity to help families make their final decision.

Enrollment Stage:

Once families decide to apply, the Enrollment stage begins. Here, the focus shifts to facilitating and simplifying the application process. Families need clear, step-by-step guidance on how to proceed.

Create content that walks them through the application process, financial aid options, and what to expect next. Consider offering virtual assistance, FAQs, and checklists to streamline their experience. This stage is about making the enrollment as smooth and stress-free as possible, ensuring families feel supported at every step.

Retention & Advocacy Stage:

After enrollment, the journey transitions to Retention & Advocacy. The goal here is to foster a strong, ongoing relationship with the family. Engage them with regular updates, involve them in school events, and seek their feedback.

Satisfied families become advocates for your school, sharing their positive experiences with others. Develop content and programs that encourage this advocacy, like parent ambassador programs or testimonial initiatives. This stage is crucial for building a loyal, supportive school community and enhancing your school's reputation.
